Marrying in South Africa, Botswana, Lesotho, Namibia and Swaziland
The laws of some countries require that, before a foreigner may marry within their jurisdiction, he or she must produce a certificate issued by the authorities of the country to which he or she belongs, stating that those authorities do not know of any impediment to the marriage. Such a certificate is known as a Certificate of No Impediment or a Nulla Osta Certificate.
The requirements for Australian citizens marrying in Pretoria’s countries of accreditation are:
- South Africa – a Certificate of No Impediment is not required.
- Botswana – A Certificate of No Impediment is required and may be issued by the Australian High Commission in Pretoria, the Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade in Australia or any Australian mission overseas.
- Lesotho - A Certificate of No Impediment is required and may be issued by the Australian High Commission in Pretoria, the Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade in Australia or any Australian mission overseas.
- Namibia – A Certificate of No Impediment is not required.
- Swaziland - A Certificate of No Impediment is required and may be issued by the Australian High Commission in Pretoria, the Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade in Australia or any Australian mission overseas.
It should be noted that a Consular Fee is payable for the issue of a Certificate of No Impediment.
