PHILIP GREEN OAM
High Commissioner to South Africa
Philip Green is a career foreign service officer with a strong background in Africa. He has been Australia’s High Commissioner to South Africa and neighbouring countries since August 2004.
He has previously served in Australian High Commissions in Tanzania and Zambia, as well as in the UK. He was from 1998 to 2000 Australia’s High Commissioner to Kenya, with accreditation to Ethiopia, Uganda, Eritrea and Tanzania.
He has also worked on African issues in the Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade and the Department of the Prime Minister and Cabinet. He escorted Nelson Mandela on his historic visit to Australia following his release from prison.
Aside from Africa Mr Green has, since joining the Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade (DFAT) in 1984, worked on issues relating to intelligence, international law, corporate management and South East Asia.
He has also spent time in Refugee Review Tribunal, and was the DFAT State Director for NSW from 2002 to March 2004. Later in 2004, he headed the Secretariat to the Inquiry Into Australian Intelligence Agencies.
He was awarded the Order of Australia Medal in 2003 for his involvement in the response to the Bali tragedy.
He holds Bachelors degrees in Arts and Law from the University of Sydney.
He is married to Dr Grace Moshi, and has three children. He enjoys jazz and bridge, and plays golf poorly.
